New Interns Arrive at IEAS

New interns: Animal care internship

 Whitney Swain

My name is Whitney Swain, and I am from Belpre, Ohio. I graduated in May 2010 from Marietta College with a BS in Biology with Psychology and Spanish minors. Prior to arriving at IEAS, I interned at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida with the Education Department. After this internship, I will pursue a career in animal husbandry or conservation education.

Amber Crawford

My name is Amber Crawford. I am from Baltimore, MD and I graduated in May 2011 from St. Mary's College of Maryland with a BA in Psychology. I spent the summer studying the development and behavior of infant rhesus macaques with researchers at the NICHD. After this internship, I hope to continue to study animal intelligence and behavior and do conservation work as well.

Betsy Holtz

My name is Betsy Holtz. I graduated from the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry with a BS in Conservation Biology. While in school, I studied abroad for a semester in Tanzania and Kenya through The School for Field Studies, studying wildlife management. After this internship I plan to pursue a career in wildlife conservation or animal husbandry while working at a zoo or exotic animal sanctuary. Ultimately, I hope to someday return to East Africa to live and work in the field of conservation, and possibly one day open and run a sanctuary for orphaned or abandoned elephants and black rhinos.

Anni Ranck

My name is Anni Ranck, and I am from Clarksville, Tennessee. I graduated in December 2011 with my Bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology from the University of Tennessee at Martin and Austin Peay State University. While in school, I interned at Reelfoot Lake State Park, the National Tiger Sanctuary, the Blueridge Parkway with the National Park Service, and the Wildlife Center of Texas in Houston. At home I work at Walden’s Puddle Wildlife Rehab Center. After applying to IEAS my freshmen year of college, I didn’t receive the internship, but after I got a little more experience I applied again because I knew that IEAS was the ideal for working and educating the public about exotic species, and I got it! My passion is educating the public about native and exotic species, and I hope to work at a wildlife rehab facility or a sanctuary. And with their AZA accreditation and recognition from the American Association of Zoo Keepers in zookeeper training, there is nowhere else I would want my internship to be to prepare me for my career!

Rebecca Donnelly

My name is Rebecca, and I am from Michigan. I graduated in May of 2010 from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Science with a major in Zoology and minor in Spanish.  In 2009 I studied veterinary medicine abroad in Guanajuato, Mexico. I hope to return to assist and educate poor farming communities about preventative veterinary care and proper nutrition for the animals that support them. After college I had a fantastic time rehabilitating injured and orphaned wildlife at the Howell Nature Center in Michigan. It has always been my dream to work with tigers at the San Diego Zoo in California.

Katy McReynolds

My name is Katy McReynolds, and I am from Abilene, Texas. I graduated in December 2011 from Tarleton State University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a minor in Animal Science. I have previously worked at the Tarleton Dairy Farm for five months and volunteered for one day at the Abilene Zoo working with mammals. After this internship I hope to get an internship at a wildlife refuge rescuing wild animals. I plan to pursue a career working with wild animals by working at a zoo or a wildlife rescue.
