Amur Leopards
Panthera pardus orientalis
Appearance
The Amur leopard is also known as the Manchurian or Korean leopard. The Amur leopard is cream-colored (red/brown in the summer), covered with large, widely spaced rosettes with tawny centers, that are surrounded by thick black rings. Weight: A male might weigh up to 50 kg; a female as little as 35 kg.
Diet
Hares, roe deer, wild boar, sika deer, musk deer.
Habitat / Distribution
Amur leopards live in remote areas of China and Russia and of North Korea (the Amur River of Siberia, Manchuria, Korea). They tend to live in hills covered with mixed forests with a variety of trees, including Korean pine. They lost 80% of their range in the wild between 1970-1983.
Reproduction / Social System
Reproduction occurs January to February with the gestation period 90-105 days. Maturity is reached in 3 years. Life span: 23 years in captivity.
Captivity
There are about 100 Amur leopards that are part of a co-ordinated conservation breeding programme throughout Europe and Russia.
